Boxed processors come in retail packaging with the maker's warranty (usually three years) and sometimes a cooler. Tray processors are the same chip sold in bulk for system builders; the warranty is often shorter or handled by the seller, and there's no cooler.
It must match your motherboard: AM5 for Ryzen 7000, 8000G and 9000; AM4 for Ryzen 5000 and older; LGA1851 for Core Ultra 200S; LGA1700 for 12th–14th Gen Core; sTR5 for Threadripper 7000 / 9000; SP5 and SP6 for EPYC; LGA4677 and LGA4710 / 7529 for Xeon Scalable and Xeon 6.
AMD's X3D processors add 3D V-Cache: extra L3 cache stacked on the chip. It mostly speeds up games; in other work they perform like their non-X3D versions.
Intel models ending in F or KF, and AMD F models such as the Ryzen 5 7500F, have no integrated graphics. Other recent desktop processors can drive a display without a graphics card.
Desktop processors (Ryzen, Core Ultra, Core) cover gaming and everyday work. Workstation (HEDT) chips like Threadripper add cores, memory channels and PCIe lanes. Server processors (EPYC, Xeon) need server motherboards and registered ECC memory.
